Flexible Grouping and Learning Stations SIA Course

The Key Components of Flexible Grouping

  • The whole group teacher-directed lesson is where teachers present the key concepts and model the targeted skills that are the grade-level focus of the lesson. Formative assessment with assessment prompts is used throughout the lesson to help teachers identify student needs.
  • Small group instruction with flexible groups reinforces or extends the content of the teacher-directed lesson.
  • Learning Stations provide purposeful, meaningful work to reinforce or extend learning as teacher(s) instruct small groups.
  • Whole group reflection at the end of the lesson is where students share and summarize what was learned and accomplished during flexible grouping time.
