Flexible grouping is a key instructional component that enables you to meet the needs of all students by placing them in small groups according to instructional needs for a portion of their instruction. The goal of flexible grouping is for struggling students to learn on grade level, for grade-level students to continue to advance their learning, and for high achievers to extend their knowledge and skills to continue growth beyond grade level requirements. While typically used in reading and math, flexible grouping allows teachers in all content areas to differentiate instruction.
Again, the important thing about flexible groups is that they are flexible—groups are purposefully formed and adjust according to the needs of students; therefore, students can move between groups to be in the appropriate group for the targeted skill.
In a flexible grouping model, Learning Stations are an important component. They offer meaningful differentiated tasks so all students are productive and engaged while the teacher provides small group instruction.
