SIA Course: Previewing Strategies

Think Alouds Copy

Think Alouds

Students often struggle because they do not have the learning strategies needed to successfully complete the Learning Activities and Assignments in lessons. Often, they do not understand how to get started on an assignment or how to carry it through to completion. They may lack the organizational skills to complete an assignment efficiently and in a timely manner. Previewing the use of specific learning strategies can help them learn better during the class lesson by using the strategies.

An important part of previewing is to identify any learning deficits that will hinder students with learning the content and skills of the lesson, and then provide experiences through Previewing that prepares them to be successful during the lesson.

One of the best ways to preview these types of skills is with a “think aloud” and demonstration. Let students see the way you plan and carry out these strategies.

You can also provide examples of the strategies. For example, giving them a schedule for completing a term paper, a copy of a  text annotated by a student, or a transcript of an academic conversation.
