Increasing the Rigor of Learning-Focused Lessons MicroPD Course 5: Higher Order Thinking Processes

9. Step by Step for Teaching the Higher Order Thinking Process

Teaching students how to use Higher Order Thinking processes skillfully requires having a good grasp of what each type of thinking involves. Since thinking goes on inside the head, it is important to make the type of thinking we want students to use as transparent as possible. You can do this through demonstrations of the steps required to use a process, through graphic organizers that visually guide thinking, and by providing clear steps to follow when using each type of thinking process. You can also help students learn the vocabulary terms associated with each process so they will be able to recognize which they are expected to use when completing tasks and assignments or answering questions.

In the Increasing the Rigor of Learning-Focused Lessons book,

In the Higher Order Thinking Strategies MicroPD course, you learned about the five guidelines for direct instruction of a Higher Order Thinking strategy or process. The steps are located on page 285.
