SIA Course: Previewing Strategies

Previewing: Higher Order Thinking Strategies and Processes Copy

A common area where many students struggle is applying Higher Order Thinking strategies and processes. With the current emphasis on rigorous thinking, previewing the use of Higher Order Thinking strategies and processes, and when each should be used, is more important than ever to student success.

Example:

The lesson will require students to infer the main idea of a text.

Preview the important vocabulary words for inference such as generalization, pattern, connection, imply, evidence, conclusion, etc. Knowing the vocabulary words enables students to understand what type of thinking is expected.

Provide and demonstrate the steps to use for cause and effect:

  1. Focus on specific pieces of information or observations.
  2. Do not make assumptions.
  3. Look for connections in the information.
  4. Make a general statement that explains the observed pattern.
  5. Use evidence to support the inference.

Preview the Graphic Organizer for the infer strategy using familiar content. Use the Inference Organizer to help students visualize the steps in the process of inferring.  Demonstrate the process using a simple example, such as I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. Think Aloud and complete the Graphic Organizer during the demonstration.
