SIA Course: Previewing Strategies

Previewing Graphic Organizer Example Copy

Mrs SmithMs. Smith previewed an Analyzing Viewpoints graphic organizer with her students.

She asked them to Think-Pair-Share about what they noticed about the graphic organizer.

Analyze ViewpointsStudents pointed out that it showed several people, that they were each holding a banner, and they were thinking about reasons for something. Several students noticed that the banner was labeled with viewpoint, one of the vocabulary words they had previewed. Ms. Smith then explained that this was an Analyzing Viewpoints graphic organizer and explained that it illustrated the steps for analyzing viewpoints. She talked about first identifying individuals with viewpoints on a specific issue, such as receiving homework. She then pointed out that the next step was to identify the viewpoints different people may have on that issue and the reasons for each viewpoint. Students became engaged thinking of the conflicting viewpoints and supporting reasons related to being assigned homework as they filled in their graphic organizer. Later, in their Social Studies lesson, they will be using the same graphic organizer to analyze the viewpoints of the colonists and England in the period leading up to the Revolutionary War.
