SIA Course: Previewing Strategies

Cause and Effect Organizer

Example:

The lesson will require students to determine cause and effect relationships.

Preview the signal words for cause and effect such as since, leads to, in order to, influenced by, etc. Knowing the signal words enables students to understand what type of thinking is expected.

Provide and demonstrate the steps to use for cause and effect:

  1. Identify the event: What happened?
  2. Identify the causes: What were the causes of the event?
  3. Identify the effects: What were the outcomes of the event?

Preview the Graphic Organizer for cause and effect using familiar content.
