Identifying the needs of students is an important component of flexible grouping. Student needs are identified through formative assessments aligned to the identified Learning Goals.

- Pre-assessment of the students’ prior knowledge and skills related to the established Learning Goals.
- Assessment prompts throughout the lesson targeted to specific Learning Goals.
- Summarizing activities at the end of a lesson to assess multiple Learning Goals.
