Learning-Focused Lessons MicroPD Course 4: Graphic Organizers

Example Graphic Organizer: Story Maps Copy

What Is It?

Story maps consist of a story’s literary elements, setting, and structure. Using a story map helps readers determine the relationships and sequencing of the different story grammar elements. Additionally, the visual representations of the elements are helpful to students when discussing and explaining. During reading comprehension, they direct the questions teachers ask in conjunction with the guided reading of the story. An integrated, sequential line of questions will lead to a better understanding than random questioning.

How Do We Get Started?

  1. Distribute the story grammar/map outline before the students read the selection.
  2. After reading the story selection have students fill out the story grammar/map outline.
  3. At this point you can have small group or whole class discussions using the outlines. This provides the opportunity for students to share their thoughts on the relationships of the story grammar.
