Training of Trainers: Increasing the Rigor of Learning-Focused Lessons Course

7. Experimenting Classroom Example

How do I determine the most effective method for finding solutions?

Your class has been studying the addition of multiple 3 and 4 digit numbers. Now that you are familiar with the steps in the process, see if you can find other ways to solve the same problem by changing one of the steps. Determine the most efficient approach, rewrite the steps in your new process, and then construct an argument for your solution.

Example Learning Goals:

  • Determine patterns for which steps are needed when solving problems and which may be changed
  • Infer possible new steps for solving problems
  • Construct an argument for which new steps produce correct solutions
