Training of Trainers: Increasing the Rigor of Learning-Focused Lessons Course

3. Generating Ideas Classroom Example

How can I use what I observe to generate ideas that will improve our performance?

The school’s soccer team has had a difficult year winning only two matches. Scoring is at a minimum and team morale is low. What ideas can you offer to help them improve? Submit a list to the coach.

Example Learning Goals:

  • Analyze the viewpoint of several members of the soccer team, including players who have been on the team for several years and those that are new. Ask them about what they think is the most significant challenge facing them as a team.
  • Group their answers into categories, such as Opponent’s Strengths, Team’s Weaknesses, Conditions Needed to Win, etc.
  • Evaluate which answers are more likely to have a significant impact on improving morale if implemented.
  • Construct an argument for why the team should try to focus on these ideas in every game.
